Description

Objective:

The course objective is for students to become familiar with common Russian socio-cultural background knowledge found in Russian youth and internet slang, and recognize socio-cultural elements present in reading and listening passages concerning daily life in Russia.

Learning Outcomes:

  • discuss the author’s intent and emotional overtones in Russian youth and internet slang;
  • evaluate Russian youth and internet slang with certain communicative situations, type of discourse, age, profession and social status of speakers/writers;
  • correlate Russian youth and internet slang with certain opinions and attitudes of speakers/writers;
  • analyze Russian youth and internet slang in line with cultural specifics of the Russian mentality and language expression at various walks of modern Russian society.
  • identify meaning and syntactic appropriateness of Russian youth and internet slang, correlating those features with neutral (business/unemotional) interpretation in Russian and translation into English
