Learning Outcomes: The student will learn about the claims function, its success, and the role each department of an insurer plays in it. Students will learn how to assess claims and conduct claims investigations, including interviewing claimants and witnesses and establishing a reserve. Students will learn to determine the cause of loss and whether liability exists, how to determine the loss amounts, and what is involved with concluding a claim. Students will gain familiarity with successful claims negotiating, the claims litigation process, and civil trials. Students will become familiar with the expanding universe of claims data, how it is mined, how to collaborate with data experts, and how to use classification tree analysis for claims. Students will learn how to detect, identify, and investigate the different types of claims fraud. Ethical claims handling will be discussed, as well as specific characteristics of good- and bad-faith claims handling, and defenses against claims of the latter.
